Questa è una lista delle città più popolose del mondo, definito in base al concetto di città vera e propria (località urbana senza considerare la sua periferia). La città vera e propria è una località definita secondo criteri giuridici o politici e da uno status urbano riconosciuto amministrativamente che solitamente è caratterizzato da un governo locale.[1][2][3]

"World Urbanization Prospects", una pubblicazione delle Nazioni Unite, definisce la popolazione di una vera e propria città come "la popolazione che vive entro i confini amministrativi di una città."[4]
